<p>Summer can be a real health challenge. Our ambitious travel plans leave us vulnerable to new influences from the new environments we so eagerly embrace. Here are some practical tips on how to stay balanced, energetic and well.  Dehydration  You neednt cross the desert to suffer from dehydration. Many of us suffer chronic dehydration simply because we dont drink as much water as we should.</p>
<p>Our bodies are 65-80% of water, depending on our age. To keep them in balance, its no surprise &#8211; we need lots of water! And many people just dont drink enough of it. Sodas, juices, coffee and teas do not answer the same need, with the result that the flow in our body systems is disturbed. Our arteries become polluted and our organ function is compromised. People with cardiac disease, and kidney and gallbladder stones often dont drink 6-8 glasses of water a day and are chronically dehydrated.  Drinking only sodas, coffee, alcohol and the like also depletes our minerals and vitamins, harming us even more. To counteract this depletion we need a quality multivitamin.</p>
<p>How to know what constitutes good quality? Put your multivitamin in a glass of water. If it hasnt dissolved in &amp;frac12; hour it will probably not be absorbed in your body, but will simply be eliminated. Be sure, too, that it is as natural as possible.</p>
<p>For example, Vitamin E called tocopheryl is obtained naturally. If this is not stated on the bottle, it is probably an artificially derived version that is inferior.</p>
<p>Stress and Depression  Stressed out? Use Vitamin C daily. If you want to detoxify as well, take at least 2000 mg. per day. Depressed? Send me an email. I am working on two articles full of practical suggestions that will make a difference.</p>
<p>Get a good massage: Your friend doesnt have to be an expert to rub some Oil of Oregano into your muscles with love and goodwill. You will feel your muscles relaxing as oxygen penetrates deep into the tissue. Dont forget your shoulders and neck, the places we most often tend to tense up.</p>
<p>Where to obtain Oil of Oregano?    Eat fruits and vegetables in abundance and avoid sugars. Did you know that every bacteria and virus loves to grow on sugar? Avoid polyunsaturated fats, use unheated cold-pressed olive oil as much as possible, and use flaxseed to get your omega</p>
<p>Summer flu  Stomach flu (or gastroenteritis) is often caused by a virus or food poisoning. Avoid solids for the first day. Drink water, broth and some apple juice to maintain your electrolyte levels. A tablespoon of acidophilus every hour can be beneficial. When you can tolerate solids, start with grated apple and cinnamon, mashed bananas and rice water (water and rice has been cooked). Aloe Vera juice is also a good option, or kefir in its natural form. If this goes well, expand your variety of foods slowly.</p>
<p>Sunburn  Aloe Vera is excellent for sunburn, whether in juice form or straight from the plant. See www.pieternel.com Its best to avoid extended exposure to sunshine as much as possible. It can dry out the mucus in your nose, eyes and ears.</p>
<p>To cleanse and make these parts succulent again, use a solution of salt water. Warm up one cup of water with a pinch of salt &#8211; about as salty as your tears. Let it cool, then put it into a dropper bottle. Use it to clean out your nose, eyes and ears, where it can accelerate the hygienic discharge of mucus.</p>
<p>Swimmers Ear (and Earaches generally)   Is anything more relaxing than getting away from it all with a good swim? For some though, this means &quot;swimmers ear&quot; and earaches. But these need not discourage you. For problems with swimmers ear use Earacheaway.</p>

<p>Digestion is a major problem in 21st century lifestyle. Everybody is too busy to sit down and eat properly, or healthily and there is a massive increase in colon cancer cases. The question we must ask of ourselves is why does this happen? Followed by what can I do about it?   Why Indigestion?   Let&#8217;s start with why does this happen because this has far wider implications than mere indigestion. Indigestion is nothing more than a symptom that your digestive juices are not performing the function that they are designed to perform. In a nutshell that means that your body is not disposing of excess or waste products.</p>
<p>This causes indigestion, heart burn etc. It also assists in putting on weight and constipation. So we have three problems now: Indigestion, obesity and bowel dysfunction. We can also add to that the potential for heart problems caused by obesity. It doesn&#8217;t come more serious does it?   What to do about it   The second question we should ask is: &quot;What can I do about it?&quot; There is a simple, natural, remedy that I will come to later but for now let&#8217;s look at what most people do about indigestion. They buy hundreds of millions of dollars worth of &#8216;off the shelf&#8217; cures. Without mentioning names of products because every supermarket and drug store have shelves full of various cures for indigestion and heartburn that I&#8217;m sure you know as many as I do. People who buy and use these products will know that, at best, they only provide temporary relief and cost quite a lot of cash for what they are. I&#8217;ve seen products retailing at $8 or $9 that contain a few cents of ingredients.</p>
<p>Little wonder they only want to give you temporary relief; this goose lays 24 carat golden eggs for the makers and sellers. Now let&#8217;s look at something that goes to the soul of the problem.</p>
<p><strong>Overcoming indigestion</strong>   To overcome indigestion, and the more serious offshoots mentioned above, you must regain the balance of your body function by stimulating your natural digestive juices to work in the manner that they should. The common link between indigestion, obesity and colon disorders is the inability of your body to break down the food that you eat and process it in the correct manner.</p>
<p>The answer is Apple Cider Vinegar. Take one Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of water with each meal. The acidity of the vinegar stimulates the natural digestive juices into performing their natural function and your body will start showing the affects within a couple of days. Often on the first day of using it.   Medicinal powers of Vinegar   The medicinal powers of vinegar have been catalogued for many years. During World War 1 common vinegar was used for cleaning infection from wounds before dressing, it has been used as antiseptic for surgery in emergencies.</p>
<p>The benefits of this product are widely publicised but just as widely ignored.   Personal experience   On a personal note I suffered from indigestion and a hiatus hernia a little over a year ago. The hiatus hernia was controlled by strict diet &#8211; mainly avoiding spicy foods. This was murder to keep up with because I love food and especially spicy food. A friend suggested I use a Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of water when I eat and I was prepared to try it. The result: I have just about forgotten what indigestion is and can eat any spicy foods that I wish and never suffer from the hiatus hernia.</p>
<p>There is one more thing that you can do to help your body function in the manner it was designed to work and that is to increase your daily exercise. I don&#8217;t mean sign up at a gym or employ a personal trainer. All you have to do is walk for at least 20 minutes each day. You can start by taking 4 walks of 5 minutes and build up to 20 minutes. It doesn&#8217;t have to be power walking, just remember that the body needs movement to function and only you can give it that. Before too long you will want to walk for 40 minutes each day as you start reclaiming your body. &#8211; Just don&#8217;t get into heavy exercise unless you have discussed what you propose to do with you doctor and she/he has approved it.   Summary   The way of life that came to the fore in the late 20th century and persists today is not a natural way for your body to function. Just be aware of that and make a few minor changes. There is little point in having a great income and lifestyle to die young is there?</p>

<p>One of my greatest problems with the control of my weight is the fact that so much self disipline is needed to achieve any tangible results. Ah, but I hear you saying, &quot;Whats new about that&quot; We all have that problem! Tell us something new!  Well yes we do all know that that is the biggest problem is it not. Lets face it, eating is one of life&#8217;s greatest pleasures, and we would be pretty abnormal if this was otherwise.  After all, most of us are &quot;regular&quot; people. How many of us stick to the perfect diet all the time, we all have our struggles with food to a greater or lesser extent. If we can recognize an awareness of this problem, and also make a point of knowing a little bit about our health, and also proper food nutrition, we are then much more likely to make wiser decisions about our choices of food.</p>
<p>Many people struggle with food &quot;cravings,&quot; and reasearch tells us that it is fairly common for food &quot;cravings&quot; to occur at certain times, quite often around bedtime. Your guard may be down, or you may have had an unusually hard day, and off you go on your not-so-merry way, intent on finding that tasty treat. Fatigue and stress often combine to take their toll on the best of intentions, so please don&#8217;t worry about it, rest assured you are not alone.   When food &quot;cravings&quot; are out of control, what started out as a bedtime snack, quickly turns into a full blown feeding frenzy&#8230;not something most of us fully understand or appreciate. We head to the kitchen and every other possible place where food can hide, quickly clearing a path as we go.  Most food cravings are not about satisfying a nutritional need or imbalance. They seem to be more emotionally related, or God forbid, are caused by plain old gluttony.</p>
<p>Exactly why we over-indulge is not completely understood, however our knowledge about this subject continues to grow.   These Are Some Of My Thoughts On How To Control Food Cravings.   If the food isn&#8217;t available, you can&#8217;t eat it. Empty the cookie jar and keep it that way! Keep healthy food choices on-hand.  It is important to recognize the feelings and emotions that will lead to a food craving. Do you have food cravings when youre bored, or maybe you are feeling lonely, or is it stress that is the trigger.</p>
<p>If you can identify the trigger which leads to that craving, then you are half way to winning the battle, because you will be able to deal with the emotion that is making you desire a certain food.   Sometimes, even recognizing that a craving is about to happen doesn&#8217;t seem to help, but please do not give yourself a hard time about it, what is done is done, do not feel guilty because after all there is always tomorrow. Why not call one of your friends and share how you were feeling at that time, because it is a very good idea to make good use of your support network.  Self-control and discipline by themselves will not cut it! If you depend totally on yourself for control, you will fail. Forming caring and supportive relationships is really essential, so if you do not currently have a support network, start building one TODAY.</p>
<p>Get enough sleep. When you are feeling really tired, you are more likely to crave things, and with me personally, it is usually chocolate, possibly you are the same.  Never give up. When you go off the rails, do not despair, get a grip, do whatever is necessary to re-gain control, because you really must get that control back. Try to practice restraint most of the time, but do not get obsessed and un-balanced in your weight loss approach. Think moderation and not total abstinence at all times!   Exercise. This will increase the feel good endorphins that will help cut down on your cravings.</p>
<p>Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. I hear so many people say that they just cannot fit in any excerise, believe me you can, we are talking about 30 minutes here, at the worst, it will mean you will have to get out of bed that bit earlier.  An early morning brisk walk will do wonders for the spirit and the soul, and will help set you up for the rest of the day!</p>
<p>Use moderation. Instead of stuffing yourself with every kind of food hoping that your cravings will disappear, eat 100 to 200 calories of whatever it is that you happen to be craving for at at that particular moment in time, but you must stop it at that!   Substitute with low-fat foods and complex carbs. If youre hungry for chocolate, eat non-fat chocolate yogurt or mousse, or try fig bars or raisins for a sweet craving instead. You will be amazed at how this will help.   You must try and never skip a meal. It is much wiser to eat something if even only an apple, every three to five hours.</p>
<p>Try six smaller meals, or regular meals with nutritious snacks in between.   Try and remember that hunger cravings are very frequently stress related. Practice other ways to cope with stress, a walk in the park for example, spiritual connections, a cozy fireplace, or even take a bath. You see, all of these stimulate neurochemicals that activate regions of the brain which increases a feeling of well being. Relaxation techniques really can be beneficial in reducing the levels of stress which you may be experiencing.   So the bottom line is to try and substitute pleasurable experiences for comfort foods.</p>
<p>Beware of certain medications which can stimulate your appetite. Certain drugs which are used for the treatment of depression and bipolar disorder can be appetite stimulants. Other drugs, both prescription and over the counter, may influence appetite as well. If you are on a medication and troubled by food cravings, discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist. You may well be able to find an alternative that doesn&#8217;t send your food cravings out of control.   Distract yourself. What&#8217;s that old expression&#8230;idle hands are the devils workshop, so get busy! Do anything other than give in to your desire for food, and keep doing it until the cravings subside.   One final thought for you. Take a look inside your refrigerator and kitchen cabinets and do some general &quot;house cleaning.&quot;</p>
<p>Throw-out all that unhealthy stuff that is waiting to sabotage your diet, and start shopping more wisely. A little forethought and careful planning will go a long way for improving your chances of success.   One of my golden rules is that I NEVER go shopping when I am hungry! Absolutely fatal!  So to conclude, remember that control is the key, eat healthily and in moderation at all times, but do not forget that at the end of the day you are only human. If you do give in to temptation, don&#8217;t beat yourself up about it, tomorrow is another day, live long, enjoy your life, and most of all be happy!</p>
